For too long, conversations about child safety, healthy practice and professional standards in dance have happened in isolation.
On Friday 14 August, we’re bringing them together.
The Creative Childhoods Summit is Australia’s first national event dedicated to safeguarding, child wellbeing and healthy practice in dance and performing arts education.
This is more than a conference. It’s an opportunity for our industry to come together, learn from national leaders, and shape the future of dance education.
Throughout the day, delegates will hear from experts in:

The National Office for Child Safety in the Attorney-General’s department is developing the Second Action Plan under the National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse 2021-2030 (National Strategy).

They have developed a 15 minute survey to confirm priority actions regarding prevention and response to child sexual abuse in Australia.

The Second Action Plan will continue the work already started under the National Strategy and introduce new activities in response to emerging issues and research. Specifically, they are seeking the broader community’s views on how best to design a Second Action Plan that addresses the diverse needs and concerns of all Australians.

Dance Arts Alliance has released a media statement in response to the recent industry guidance regarding teaching rates for dancers.

As Australia’s peak advocacy body for dance educators, we support fair remuneration for professional dancers and welcome discussion around reviewing the industrial framework for dance teachers. However, we believe it is important to distinguish between professional performance experience and the qualifications required to teach children safely and effectively.

Teaching children is a profession in its own right. It requires specialised knowledge of child development, pedagogy, safe dance practice, anatomy, lesson planning, behaviour management, child safeguarding and inclusive education. While professional dancers bring invaluable industry experience and inspiration to our studios, performance experience alone should not be regarded as equivalent to a professional teaching qualification.

Earlier this year, Dance Arts Alliance released *The Scale and Impact of Dance and Performing Arts Participation in Australia*, highlighting that more than 500,000 Australian children participate in dance each week, with more than one million participating in the performing arts more broadly. These findings reinforce the importance of ensuring those entrusted with educating children have the appropriate qualifications, training and child safety credentials.

Dance Arts Alliance continues to advocate for nationally recognised minimum standards for dance teachers and welcomes the opportunity to work collaboratively with teacher training organisations, professional dancers, studio owners, industry bodies and governments to strengthen professional standards across our sector.

This is not about performers versus teachers. Our industry needs both. Professional dancers and qualified dance teachers each make a unique and valuable contribution to the development of the next generation. By recognising the distinct expertise each profession brings, we can continue to strengthen our industry while ensuring every child has access to safe, high-quality dance education.

We’re delighted to welcome Dr Kaitlin Hague to the Creative Childhoods Summit 2026.

Dr Kaitlin Hague is a dance educator, researcher and founder of The Talented Dancer, an initiative dedicated to translating the latest dance science research into practical guidance for teachers, studios and families.

With more than 20 years’ teaching experience and doctoral research from the Queensland University of Technology examining early specialisation in ballet, Kaitlin is a leading voice in healthy, evidence-based dance education. She is passionate about ensuring children are supported through developmentally appropriate training that protects childhood while still nurturing excellence.

Session: Training Children as Professionals – Overtraining and Child Safety in Dance

In this thought-provoking session, Kaitlin will challenge us to consider whether children are sometimes being asked to train as miniature professionals before their bodies, minds and identities are ready.

Drawing on her doctoral research, Kaitlin will explore:
✨ Early specialisation and child development
✨ Overtraining as a child safety and wellbeing issue
✨ The physical and psychological impacts of intensive training
✨ Where duty of care sits for studios, teachers and families

In case you missed it: at our AGM in April, we welcomed Sophie Stewart as our newest board member!
Sophie Stewart is the Business Manager at The Avenue Performance Studio, a multi-location dance and performing arts studio based in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire.
With a lifelong background in dance and community theatre, Sophie is passionate about creative education, community connection and supporting young people to thrive. At The Avenue, she plays a key role in operational leadership, preschool programming and community engagement initiatives across local schools and preschools.
Sophie is a strong advocate for child safety and child-centred practice within the performing arts, with a focus on creating positive, inclusive and empowering environments for young performers.
We are thrilled to welcome Sophie’s leadership, insight and advocacy to the future direction of Dance Arts Alliance.
