💭 Studio Reflection Question

If a child disclosed a safeguarding concern today...
Would every member of your team know what to do?
Would they understand reporting requirements?
Would they know who to contact?
Would they feel confident responding appropriately?

Safeguarding isn’t simply about having policies on a shelf.

It’s about creating cultures where children feel safe, staff feel prepared and concerns are responded to appropriately.

These are the conversations we’ll be exploring at the Creative Childhoods Summit.

Australia’s Dance & Performing Arts Sector is Ready for This Conversation

For too long, conversations about child safety, healthy practice and professional standards in dance have happened in isolation.
On Friday 14 August, we’re bringing them together.
The Creative Childhoods Summit is Australia’s first national event dedicated to safeguarding, child wellbeing and healthy practice in dance and performing arts education.
This is more than a conference. It’s an opportunity for our industry to come together, learn from national leaders, and shape the future of dance education.
Throughout the day, delegates will hear from experts in:
• Child protection and safeguarding
• Government and policy
• Education and research
• Mental health and wellbeing
• Healthy dance practice
• Organisational leadership
• Dance and performing arts education
Together, we’ll explore practical strategies to create environments where children and young people are not only safe, but genuinely supported to flourish.

The Summit will also see the official launch of KidsPACE (Protecting and Advancing Childhood in Education), a new national framework designed to support child-centred, evidence-informed and age-appropriate practice across dance and performing arts education.

Whether you’re a dance studio owner, performing arts educator, school leader, competition organiser, arts organisation or simply passionate about the future of our industry, we invite you to be part of this important day.

🎟 Special Team Offer – Available Until 31 July
Bring your team and learn together.
Purchase one full-price ticket and receive two FREE registrations for up to two additional team members, making it easier to return to your organisation with shared knowledge and practical strategies.

📊 Dance By The Numbers

Did you know?

Australia is estimated to have:
🏢 Approximately 4,000 private dance studios
👧 Approximately 800,000 students aged 0–18 enrolled nationally

These studios are more than businesses.

They are community hubs where young people develop confidence, friendships, creativity and lifelong skills.

Dance educators play a significant role in shaping the experiences of hundreds of thousands of Australian children every year.

The scale of our industry matters.

And so does the responsibility that comes with it.

The National Office for Child Safety in the Attorney-General’s department is developing the Second Action Plan under the National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse 2021-2030 (National Strategy).

They have developed a 15 minute survey to confirm priority actions regarding prevention and response to child sexual abuse in Australia.

The Second Action Plan will continue the work already started under the National Strategy and introduce new activities in response to emerging issues and research. Specifically, they are seeking the broader community’s views on how best to design a Second Action Plan that addresses the diverse needs and concerns of all Australians.

Dance Arts Alliance has released a media statement in response to the recent industry guidance regarding teaching rates for dancers.

As Australia’s peak advocacy body for dance educators, we support fair remuneration for professional dancers and welcome discussion around reviewing the industrial framework for dance teachers. However, we believe it is important to distinguish between professional performance experience and the qualifications required to teach children safely and effectively.

Teaching children is a profession in its own right. It requires specialised knowledge of child development, pedagogy, safe dance practice, anatomy, lesson planning, behaviour management, child safeguarding and inclusive education. While professional dancers bring invaluable industry experience and inspiration to our studios, performance experience alone should not be regarded as equivalent to a professional teaching qualification.

Earlier this year, Dance Arts Alliance released *The Scale and Impact of Dance and Performing Arts Participation in Australia*, highlighting that more than 500,000 Australian children participate in dance each week, with more than one million participating in the performing arts more broadly. These findings reinforce the importance of ensuring those entrusted with educating children have the appropriate qualifications, training and child safety credentials.

Dance Arts Alliance continues to advocate for nationally recognised minimum standards for dance teachers and welcomes the opportunity to work collaboratively with teacher training organisations, professional dancers, studio owners, industry bodies and governments to strengthen professional standards across our sector.

This is not about performers versus teachers. Our industry needs both. Professional dancers and qualified dance teachers each make a unique and valuable contribution to the development of the next generation. By recognising the distinct expertise each profession brings, we can continue to strengthen our industry while ensuring every child has access to safe, high-quality dance education.

🎤 Speaker Announcement | Dr Kaitlin Hague

We’re delighted to welcome Dr Kaitlin Hague to the Creative Childhoods Summit 2026.

Dr Kaitlin Hague is a dance educator, researcher and founder of The Talented Dancer, an initiative dedicated to translating the latest dance science research into practical guidance for teachers, studios and families.

With more than 20 years’ teaching experience and doctoral research from the Queensland University of Technology examining early specialisation in ballet, Kaitlin is a leading voice in healthy, evidence-based dance education. She is passionate about ensuring children are supported through developmentally appropriate training that protects childhood while still nurturing excellence.

Session: Training Children as Professionals – Overtraining and Child Safety in Dance

In this thought-provoking session, Kaitlin will challenge us to consider whether children are sometimes being asked to train as miniature professionals before their bodies, minds and identities are ready.

Drawing on her doctoral research, Kaitlin will explore:
✨ Early specialisation and child development
✨ Overtraining as a child safety and wellbeing issue
✨ The physical and psychological impacts of intensive training
✨ Where duty of care sits for studios, teachers and families
✨ Practical, evidence-informed strategies for designing age-appropriate training that supports both excellence and healthy childhoods

This is an essential conversation for every dance educator committed to creating environments where children can flourish—not just as dancers, but as young people.

We are incredibly honoured to have Dr Hague joining us as we work together to protect childhood and shape the future of dance education.

📢 Studio owners: have you reviewed your staff wages following the latest Fair Work Award increase?

As of 1 July 2026, minimum wage rates under modern awards increase following the Fair Work Commission`s Annual Wage Review.

For dance and performing arts education businesses, it is important to understand that the industry currently operates under the Fitness Industry Award for teaching staff and the Clerks – Private Sector Award for administrative employees.

Many studio owners continue to have questions around:
✔ Staff classifications
✔ Award coverage
✔ Wage rates
✔ Employment obligations
✔ Contractor vs employee arrangements

To support members, DAA has developed the Best Practice Guide for Employing Staff in Dance Education and Performing Arts Studios.

This resource is specifically designed to guide studio owners in aligning the work performed by teachers and studio staff with the legally recognised awards that currently apply to our businesses:
✅ Fitness Industry Award
✅ Clerks – Private Sector Award

While DAA cannot provide legal advice, this guide has been developed to promote fair, compliant and sustainable employment practices across our sector.

⚠️ Please note: This document is a recommendation only. For specific legal advice relating to your business, DAA recommends engaging a qualified employment lawyer or workplace relations specialist.

As an industry, it is essential that we continue to build professional, sustainable workplaces that support both studio owners and the educators who work within them.
