Dance Arts Alliance (DAA) was founded in 2020 in response to the urgent need for representation of the dance and performing arts education sector during the COVID-19 pandemic. We fought tirelessly for the recognition of our industry’s value, connecting with government officials and media to ensure our voices were heard. This work secured vital support for dance studio owners and educators, ensuring businesses could survive in uncertain times.

Today, DAA continues this advocacy, striving to create a regulated and safe environment for students, while advocating for the growth and sustainability of our members’ businesses.

LONG WEEKEND WELLBEING

With a long weekend fast approaching, we encourage you to lean in and give yourself permission to pause and reconnect with yourself.
Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is REST and RESET.

This could be in the form of any type of ’self care’. Self care looks different for everyone but it’s finding what helps you feel grounded, rested and calm. This may be a break from devices, quiet walk, journalling, watching your favourite movie or TV show, moving your body, practicing mindfulness or saying No to an event or commitment.

Check in with yourself. What do you truly need right now? You are allowed to give yourself permission to take time out without feeling guilty.

As studio owners, teachers we spend a lot of time planning, leading and being all things to everyone. We often forget to hold space and time for ourselves.

The long weekend, is the perfect time to prioritise rest. It is often when we find the calm amongst the chaos, pause, reflect that we create space to move forward with renewed energy, clarity, purpose and joy.

LONG WEEKEND WELLBEING

Meet our Team: Chelsea Hyde

Dance Arts Alliance confirms that students participating in formalised training programs (such as DanceStep) are not considered employees when their involvement is part of a structured, supervised educational experience.

✅ Documented training program
✅ Supervised practical learning
✅ No replacement of paid staff
✅ Aligned with child employment and child safety obligations

This position is supported in Victoria by the Wage Inspectorate and sets a recommended national benchmark for best practice.

🛡️ Studios must also meet Child Safe Standards in every state and territory.

Meet our Board: Poppy Donaldson

From a small town in NZ to the heart of Melbourne’s dance scene, Poppy Donaldson has been a dance teacher since the age of 14, whose career began choreographing for community theatre in her hometown. After training in Contemporary and Ballet at Hagley School of Dance, she earned a scholarship to The Edge Performers School in Melbourne.
As a teacher for over 15 years, Poppy has choreographed for many companies across Australia and New Zealand, and taken a team to the KAR Nationals in Las Vegas (placing in the Top 5!). Now Artistic Director and Studio Manager at Next Generation Dance, she’s passionate about sharing her love of technique and turning dancers into artists.

Meet our Board: Kristen Morton

From a young girl dancing at Johnny Young Talent School to a powerhouse in the dance industry, Kristen’s journey has been driven by passion, purpose, and a love for Jazz. With 38+ years of experience across multiple styles, she began teaching at 17 and was managing dance studios by 20. While juggling a Business degree, she built a career in event management, but found her heart always belonged to dance. In 2008, she founded Kreationz Dance - an inclusive space for dancers of all abilities where she’s nurtured hundreds of dancers and future educators. Now a Board Member of Dance Arts Alliance, she champions child safety and positive change across the industry.
