Meet our Board: Kristen Morton

From a young girl dancing at Johnny Young Talent School to a powerhouse in the dance industry, Kristen’s journey has been driven by passion, purpose, and a love for Jazz. With 38+ years of experience across multiple styles, she began teaching at 17 and was managing dance studios by 20. While juggling a Business degree, she built a career in event management, but found her heart always belonged to dance. In 2008, she founded Kreationz Dance - an inclusive space for dancers of all abilities where she’s nurtured hundreds of dancers and future educators. Now a Board Member of Dance Arts Alliance, she champions child safety and positive change across the industry.

🚨 MEDIA RELEASE: Dance Arts Alliance Calls for National Regulation to Safeguard Dance Education 🚨

Today, Dance Arts Alliance (DAA) has released a landmark position paper calling for urgent action to protect children, support educators, and raise professional standards across Australia’s dance education sector.

“There are more than 4,000 dance studios operating in Australia, yet no national framework exists to ensure child safety or minimum teaching standards,” said DAA Chair Melanie Gard. “This paper puts forward a clear solution: practical, inclusive regulation designed with the industry, not imposed on it.”

Among the strongest supporters of this work is Member for Hastings, Paul Mercurio MP — an iconic Australian dancer with firsthand experience of training and education in the sector:

“Families need to know their children are safe in every activity they do. DAA know the industry inside out and are best placed to lead this work. I’ve endorsed this position paper and look forward to working with DAA and other industry representatives to make Dance and Performing Arts education safe for our children and young people.” – Paul Mercurio MP

The report proposes a collaborative, sector-led approach to:
✔️ Establish an independent national regulatory body
✔️ Introduce mandatory accreditation for studios and instructors
✔️ Require training in child protection, injury prevention, and ethics
✔️ Support small and regional studios with a tiered, affordable model
✔️ Launch a national awareness campaign for parents and families

With over 25 years of teaching experience, Jessica is a qualified and accredited dance teacher, examiner, personal trainer, yoga teacher, holistic counsellor, and nutrition coach. In 2012, Jessica founded The Dance Centre in Avondale Heights, known for its welcoming, flexible, and stress-free environment for students and families alike.
Beyond the studio, Jessica proudly supports many child-focused charities and brings her expertise and heart to the DAA Board, working towards a safer, more regulated future for our dance industry.

As Director of HD Dance, Lisa is a Licentiate with Cecchetti Ballet Australia, holds a Certificate IV in Dance Teaching & Management, is an Affiliate Member of ATOD, and has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Food Technology). She also serves on the Victorian Cecchetti Committee.
With a 20-year background in quality management and sustainability, Lisa brings unique leadership and high professional standards to her studio and to her role on the DAA Board. Rachel holds many qualifications across the Dance & Fitness and Sales & Marketing industries, and as a performer has personal experience in TV, print media and professional competition. She brings all of this experience to her role as Secretary with Dance Arts Alliance.
From 20 to 180+ students, she’s built a vibrant community where every dancer - regardless of age, style, or ability - feels seen and supported.

Mike is the co-director of the Australian Academy of Dance, one of the country’s largest studios, with safety, inclusivity, and safe dance practices at the core of the studio values. Mike’s mission is to create inspiring, secure spaces where every child can thrive. Through advocacy, education, and action, he is helping lead the push for lasting change across the dance industry.
