Dance Arts Alliance Calls for National Working With Children Check Framework for Australia’s Dance Education Industry

As seen on the Herald Sun – 15th August 2025

As the Attorneys-General of Australia prepare to discuss Working With Children Checks (WWCC), Dance Arts Alliance (DAA) aims to ensure the voice of our sector is heard loud and clear.

Dance is one of the most popular organised activities for children in Australia, especially young girls, yet our sector continues to operate without consistent, nationwide child safety protections. In particular, the current state-by-state WWCC framework leaves dangerous loopholes. A person under investigation in one jurisdiction may legally continue working with children in another. This must change.

DAA is advocating for:

  • A national WWCC system where checks, suspensions, or investigations are recognised in all states and territories.
  • A central employer-accessible dashboard recording WWCC statuses.
  • Mandatory notification to employers across jurisdictions when investigations or suspensions occur.

We have called for our members to take part in a coordinated letter campaign by writing to local Members of Parliament, alongside our discussions in the media (see our Media Release below). Together, we can help secure stronger protections for the children in our care, and better, safer business conditions for our studios.
